Designer Dog Clothes - Choosing Between Fashion or Function
Are dog clothes and dog accessories really necessary or are they completely frivolous?
Dogs crave love and attention. But do they crave designer doggie clothes? When their owner dresses them up in pretty outfits and silly costumes, do they lose their doggy dignity?
Years ago it was not uncommon to see a dog in a knit sweater or some other cute clothing article, but today there are nearly as many clothing choices for dogs as there are for people. There are dresses and slacks, raincoats, eyewear, headwear, footwear, and every imaginable accessory.
The answer to whether or not dog clothes and dog accessories are of any importance has to do with the type of clothing and its purpose.
The purpose of dressing dogs in holiday costumes exists solely for the benefit of the owner, not the dog. Humans get immense entertainment out of seeing their pooches dressed up in costume.
Some dog owners believe that dog fashions can be fun. Your dog can look flirty, funky, flashy or glamorous. Never before in the history of our dog have there been so many choices to make. There are clothes and shoes, and an overwhelming choice of collars, leashes and dog carriers.
Some dog owners enjoy dressing their dogs up in the latest of dog clothes, hats and jewelry because it is interactive. People stop and talk about it. The same is true when humans dress up in the latest of fashion. It’s fun to them. It opens up channels of communication with others and gives them attention.
The other, more important purpose of dog clothing is to give the dog extra protection from the cold. Dog clothes and accessories are very beneficial to small dogs, delicate breeds and dogs that work outdoors in extreme weather conditions. During these extreme conditions, your main objective is to keep your dog safe and warm, not to make him look cute.
Does anyone really know how the dog feels about being dressed in miniature versions of human clothes? Do they like it or do we just assume they like it? When selecting dog clothes, choose styles that are attractive, inoffensive, and designed with your dog's comfort and safety in mind.
No matter what type of clothing you dress your dog in, be sure never to ridicule or laugh at your dog. When choosing and using dog clothes, let your dog be in on the fun, not become the butt of the joke. If your dog feels embarrassed, uncomfortable or does not care for the outfit, don’t force him to wear it. Love him up before you dress him up.
