Martingale Training Collar - The Greyhound Collar

A Martingale collar is also known as a greyhound collar. The Martingale collar was originally designed for dog breeds whose necks are larger than their heads. Examples of such breeds are greyhounds, whippets, and Italian greyhounds.

Martingale collars are made of round nylon construction, so there is no damage to the hair around the neck, and provides even pressure to the dog’s neck rather then pulling and yanking at the throat. These types of collars allow for instant correction and release.

Martingale collars provide “limited choke” on the dog’s neck. Once around the dog's neck, the collar can lie flat, like a buckle collar, or, with a leash attached, it will constrict to the size of the dog's throat. These collars are designed to give you more control and reduce the chances of your dog wriggling out and escaping from the collar. Martingale collars are extremely flexible and they eliminate the danger of choking even if the dog gets very excited.

The Martingale collar has gained popularity among other dog breed owners who prefer the gentle control of a Martingale collar to a choke chain. The Martingale collar is also popular among owners of dogs who try to back out of their traditional buckle collars. Finally, owners of agility, flyball trainers and sled dogs use the Martingale collar to keep a handle on their dog’s collar at all times. Martingale collars are also great collars for training and showing.

The Martingale collar is fitted to the exact size of the dog's neck when the dog collar is in the closed position. Properly fitted, the collar will be comfortably loose when not in use. When the Martingale loop is pulled, the collar should be very snug, but should not constrict the airway. When properly fitted, a Martingale collar is safe to wear everyday, but if used in training as an alterative to a choke chain, the Martingale collar should be adjusted to fit slightly tighter for the time of supervised training only.

There are many different styles and fabrics of the Martingale collar, and many are custom designed and handmade. These collars can be found in leather, nylon, velvet and silk brocade just to name a few, and can also be found in many designer fabrics.
