Dog Grooming In Albany - Grooming Your Dog Regularly - Buy DIY Dog Grooming Supplies

Grooming your dog means that you're taking good care of his health by keeping a watchful eye on his hygiene. Dogs are more likely to remain healthy when they are clean and well groomed. Dogs require regular grooming attention to keep them healthy in their domestic environments. One of the major benefits of a regular grooming regimen is that you will become familiar with your dog’s body, and this will allow you to recognize any potential problems he may have with his health.

When starting a grooming regimen for your dog, be sure to cover all the basics: coat, nails, eyes, ears, teeth and bathing.

Brushing your dog’s coat is an important part of his well being. It is one of the simplest things you can do for your dog, but it is also one of the most necessary. Brushing helps to make your dog look better and feel better by removing dead hair and dirt, it spreads the natural oils throughout his coat and prevents his fur from becoming matted. Dogs that are regularly brushed have a healthier and shinier coat because it stimulates the blood supply to the skin.

Whether your dog has long or short hair will determine how often he should be brushed. Dogs with long hair require more frequent brushings than dog with short hair. Dogs with short hair only require once a week brushing sessions. Some breeds require daily brushing to keep their hair in good condition.

Trim your dog’s nails about once a month, and use a clipper designed for the size and breed of your dog. Your dog's claws should not ever extend so far that his nails come in contact with the ground when he's standing normally on a flat surface. Be careful not to trim your dog's nails too far down; you could cut into the quick (the part of their nail which contains the blood).

Examine your dog’s eyes often to make sure that everything looks good. You want to ensure that any abnormal conditions are noticed as soon as possible so that your veterinarian can begin treatment immediately. Be careful with your pet's eyes during all parts of the grooming process. Dogs have very sensitive eyes, and soap-even "tearless" soap-can damage their corneas.

Ears are a prime place for odor causing infections to occur. Regularly pick up your dog’s ear flaps and examine the inside. Make sure that they are a healthy pink color. If everything looks good, wipe the outer flap of the ear with a cotton ball, being careful not to touch any part of the ear that you cannot easily see. If you notice an odor or discharge, take your dog to the veterinarian to have his ears examined.

Just like humans, routine dental care is essential to your dog’s overall good health. Periodontal disease can lead to gum disease and loss of teeth. Using a small toothbrush with soft bristles, your dog’s teeth should be brushed once or twice a week. Your veterinarian should perform yearly dental check-ups on your dog, and will let you know when you need to have your dog’s teeth professionally cleaned.

Bathing your dog can be a chore, especially if he hates bath time. How often a dog needs a bath depends on his breed and his activities. When bathing, use a shampoo especially designed for dogs and avoid getting the shampoo in his eyes. When bath time is finished, dry him off with a towel or a dryer if he will let you.
