Whether it is a crate, backpack or handbag type of carrier, as a dog owner, it is your responsibility to choose the most suitable type for your dog. The following criteria are a guideline when choosing the most appropriate carrier for your dog.
Plastic or Wire Dog Carriers:
1. The quality of plastic crates varies between manufacturers and you'll need to get one sturdy enough to resist chewing.
2. When searching for the appropriate dog crate, make sure the dimensions and weight of the crate are suitable for the size and breed of dog.
3. If you have a puppy, choose a crate that will accommodate him as an adult. Dividers can be purchased to section off a crate if needed.
4. If you are planning to travel with your dog, choose airline approved dog carriers.
5. Be sure the carrier provides enough ventilation.
Handbag Dog Carriers:
1. Select a dog carrier that is durable.
2. Choose the appropriate size carrier for the type of breed.
3. For your comfort, be sure the handbag is lightweight and portable.
4. Be sure the dog carrier has a sturdy bottom to help your dog feel more secure as you carry him around.
5. Be sure that the straps on the handbag are strong and sturdy enough to carry the weight of the dog.
6. Remove any plastic pieces or hardware that could injure your dog.
7. Be sure the handbag is supplied with a hand washable, removable liner and pad.
8. Provide your dog with a soft interior.
9. Be sure your dog carrier has mesh openings on both sides of the bag to provide proper ventilation.
10. Select a dog carrier that provides a full-length top zippered entry. This allows for easy access in and out of the carrier.
11. Be sure the dog carrier contains a collar/leash clip to keep your dog in place.
