Dog Clothes - Why We Make Our Canine Wear Clothings Or Dog Sweaters
Many people wonder, why do dog owners put clothes on their dogs? Why are the dogs wearing dog sweaters? There are several answers to that question, and it all depends on the person, where they live and what breed of dog they have.
Dog clothes were originally developed for use by the military and law enforcement agencies for visual identity purposes as well as protection, from both the surrounding environment and attack. Uses of protective clothing for animals can be traced back to the times of King Arthur, where Knights used to cover their horses for protection during battle.
The modern role of dogs has changed to become more of a family member. Because we consider the dog to be a member of our family, we also choose to cloth them, whether it be for protection from the elements or simply for fun and fashion.
What first comes to mind is practicality- the dog is cold and the owner dresses the dog in a sweater to help keep it warm. Jackets and outerwear do have a purpose, depending on the breed of dog and the climate. Smaller dog breeds have a tendency to lose their body heat quickly and therefore benefit from dog clothes. But nowadays people are dressing their dog for other reasons:
• Some people think of their dogs as their children and choose to project the image of a child onto their dog by dressing them in cute dog clothes.
• Some people dress their pets as a sign of affection and feel that it strengthens their bond with their dog.
• Some people believe the clothes look cute on the dog and believe the dog enjoys wearing clothes. They believe it keeps their dog happy.
• Some people have the money to dress up their dog, projecting an image of sophistication.
• Some consider their dog as an accessory and dress the dog to compliment their outfit.
• For status reasons- some people believe dog-designer clothes impresses others.
• Some people dress their dog because they think it is cute, funny and entertaining.
When purchasing dog clothes, safety and comfort are the most important things to consider. Make sure that the coat fits properly, snug enough so a foot or mouth won't get caught where it doesn't belong, and loose enough so it isn't constricting. Also consider how easy or difficult the item is to put on and take off. If your dog is caught or injured, be sure the coat can be removed quickly.
Caution is also advised when leaving your dog unattended with clothes on. If your dog is bored or doesn't like the clothing, chewing and destruction may be the result.
